Our Story
In early 2017 we had the most normal life you could imagine. Tom worked as a full time government contractor at Pax River. I ran a busy real estate business. We had just built and moved into our “dream” home in a little country neighborhood with 2 acres and a swing set. We had toddlers, a boy and a girl.
This is where things get a little spicy 😉.
But first, let me backup a bit. I grew up in 4-H and on a small farm in Southern Maryland. I funded my horse ownership and farm projects by working in friends' hay and tobacco fields. I understood small farming. Tom was raised in a Navy family that never went near a farm.
One thing you may know about Tom and I is that we never do things “just a little bit”.
So one day Tom says “I want a farm. A big one. Maybe 100 acres.”
I of course laughed and told him he was crazy and had no idea what he was talking about.
The seed was planted…
Then, we visited Williamsburg and did the James River Plantation tour. I have a crazy love for American history and could hug every old brick I see just to feel the past seep into my soul.
Yes - weird, I know.
We came home dreaming and then Tom sent me a link for a new listing.
Historic Cedar Hill Farm… 75 acres and a 300+ year old brick house.
Uh oh. You guessed it. Around 3 weeks later we were under contract and the rest is history!
Over the first few years we slowly added animals, fruit trees, expanded the garden and pretty much just provided food for ourselves. A third child surprised us in 2019 and added to the craziness that had become our wonderful world. In 2021 we decided that we loved this life so much that we wanted to grow and offer what we produce to the public.
In 2022, Porky Pastures was born. We now offer all natural, pastured meats and chemical free plants, veggies, and trees! We use rotational grazing to implement regenerative farming practices and are always striving to provide healthier, more natural foods for our family and our community.
Now, I still sell houses because I love my clients/friends and Tom still works part time at his government job because well… health insurance lol, but, we farm full time and have built this wonderful crazy life that is absolutely anything but normal.
We’re excited that you’re following us and taking the journey with us!
